For most bareboat charters in the Mediterranean you need a recognised skipper certificate (RYA Day Skipper, ICC, or equivalent) plus a VHF licence. If you don’t hold one, we book a professional skipper alongside the boat for the week.
The base charter fee covers the boat, standard equipment, insurance, and final cleaning fee in most cases. Extras such as fuel, port fees, transit log, tourist tax and skipper service are billed separately and explained in the booking summary.
For peak weeks (mid-July to late August) we recommend booking 6–9 months ahead to lock in the boat and the early-bird discount. Shoulder seasons (May, June, September) usually have availability up to a month before departure.
The Ionian Sea — west of mainland Greece — is the Greek charter ground for guests who want softer sailing than the Cyclades and more lush, green landscape than the Aegean. The Meltemi barely reaches here; instead, you get a moderate northwesterly typically 8–18 knots, with afternoon thunderstorms possible in late August. The chain runs roughly Corfu → Paxos → Antipaxos → Lefkas → Meganisi → Ithaca → Cephalonia → Zakynthos.
Charter base for many weeks because of the international airport (CFU). Provision in Gouvia Marina (15 min from airport), then sail south. The old town is UNESCO-listed; eat at Klimataria or Rouvas for traditional pastitsada. Robola from Cephalonia and Mavrodaphne (sweet red) are the obvious wine choices.
22 nm south of Corfu. Three small ports: Gaios (the capital, narrow channel), Lakka (north, sheltered), Loggos (east, smallest). All three serve fresh fish and grilled lavraki. Walk the olive groves — Paxos is one of Greece’s most concentrated olive-oil islands, and the Antipaxos PDO oils are sold in Gaios harbour shops.
5 nm south of Paxos. Day-stop only — no formal marina. Voutoumi and Vrika are the iconic Ionian beaches. Spiros taverna at Vrika serves grilled octopus and Robola. Anchor outside the bay, dinghy in.
Connected to the mainland by a swing bridge that opens hourly. Charter-friendly because boats can pass through to Vasiliki Bay (windsurfing capital, strong afternoon thermal) or south to Sivota and Meganisi. Eat at Captain’s Corner in Lefkas Town (psarosoupa, the local fish soup). Lefkas’s indigenous wine is Vertzami — a deep red worth ordering.
The “secret” island east of Lefkas. Three villages: Vathy (main port, narrow inlet), Spilia (cove anchorage), and Spartochori (tiny hilltop village with two tavernas). Anchorages in Atheni Bay and Kapali Bay are protected from south-westerlies — useful when summer thunderstorms arrive.
Odysseus’s home in the Odyssey — and a quiet, low-key island today. Vathy is the main port. Hire a scooter to ride to Anogi (mountaintop village with a hidden Byzantine church) and to Filiatro Bay for a swim. Eat at Trehantiri in Vathy.
Sami and Fiskardo are the two charter ports. Fiskardo is the prettier of the two — Venetian-era harbour, walking-distance restaurants. The island is the Robola wine center; visit Robola Cooperative in Omala for tastings. Try the meat-pie kreatopita and the sun-dried bonito (lakerda).
Far south end of the chain. Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is the famous photo stop — anchor in the bay outside, dinghy in, and watch tour boats arrive in batches all morning. The blue caves on the northeast coast are worth a detour.
A 7-day Ionian week: Corfu → Paxos → Antipaxos → Lefkas (Vasiliki) → Meganisi → Ithaca → back via Lefkas → Corfu. Distances 12–35 nm per leg. Bareboat catamaran 6,500–11,000 EUR shoulder, 12,000–18,000 EUR peak. Crewed adds 4,500–6,000 EUR.
